With the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) upon us, there was no better time for 3D online poker room, PKR Poker, to present a new advertisement across European broadcasting networks. Unfortunately for PKR Poker, the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) did not agree with their methods.
The ASA claimed that PKR Poker’s projected a theme that “glamorized” gambling and online poker, and would appeal too much to the younger generation. The ASA stated that the visual of an animated avatar laughing as he pushed all of his chips into the center of the table was an inappropriate highlighting of the game.
Granted, poker players are not often in the most jovial mood when they make life game-changing decision to push their remaining chips into a pot, but PKR countered that the company was merely trying to show off its exceptionally sophisticated graphics that go well beyond that of most online poker rooms, entering the realm of 3-demensional virtual reality.
PKR also noted that the voiceover of the commercial did represent a reasonably realistic and balanced interpretation of gambling.
The ASA discontinued complaints of the PKR Poker advertisement appealing to young people, but maintains its stance that the commercial was inappropriate in its depiction of gambling. PKR Poker.com has been ordered not to air the advertisement again in its current state.
