It’s been said many times that the best way to decrease losses and increases wins in Texas Hold’Em Poker is to implement a Tight Aggressive Poker Strategy. Let’s start by defining ‘Tight‘ and ‘Aggressive‘.

Tight: A tight poker player is one who only plays sure hands – those with the maximum potential for winning. Anything else, he will Fold.

Aggressive: An aggressive poker player is one who goes for it all when his chances of winning are at their greatest. This means he will bet high right out of the gate – Raise, Raise again, go All In if he has to.

The combination of a Tight/Aggressive poker strategy omits the need for bluffing because he plays tight and bets high on only great hands. It also means he’ll only participate in about 15% of the poker hands, folding pre-flop the remainder of the time. Many poker players pass over this poker strategy, considering it to be too boring to be worth it. However, if winning all of the chips is your goal, or at least a good chunk of the prize pool, isn’t it worth it?

If you answered yes, continue reading. Below you’ll find all of the Texas Hold’Em Starting Hands (Hole Cards) a Tight/Aggressive player should stay in the game with. Remember, this is a strict poker strategy – only bet/raise if you receive the following starting hands.

Any Pair:
A-A through 2-2

High Sequences:
A-K
K-Q

High Suited (i.e. all heart, all spades, etc.):
A-K
K-Q
Q-J

For beginners, it is best to keep yourself on a strict starting hand regiment. Once you’ve gotten a feel for the game, your instincts and skills will grow with knowledge. When you believe you are ready, and I mean truly ready (not just bored!), let your skill and instincts take over. They will determine for you what hands should and should not be played.

Keep in mind, even the best possible starting hand, A-A, will only win 50% of the time when playing only 5 opponents (85% against 1 opponent). A full table holds no guarantees, no matter what the strategy! As you become a seasoned poker player, your abilities will be determined by instinct and skill - and a little bit of luck never hurt!
